  13. In order to save file transfer time, there is only one pattern  in this release. Use the new "Import All" feature to grab all the patterns out of your old BeforeDark or download the "Default BeforeDark Patterns" available on line here and import them.

  15. THE IMPORT BUG †
  16.  
  17. Some people were having trouble importing "Desktop Textures" patterns, as it turns out the author is saving modified 'ppat' resources that use his own compression scheme. So, I now check to make sure a 'ppat' is really a 'ppat'.

  19. NEW INSTALLATION METHOD
  20.  
  21. I have changed the method of installing patterns because no matter how much I documented the "Virginize" command, invariably someone would not see it and get understandably concerned.

  23. The alternative method installs a tiny application in your "Startup Items" folder and applies the desired pattern when you Startup.

  25. Advantages:
  26. The "General" control panel's pattern editor still works properly.
  27.  
  28. Disadvantages:
  29. You see your normal desktop pattern for a couple of  seconds every time you boot.
  30.  
  31. Use the "Remove Startup Pattern" command in the "File" menu or simply trash the file entitled "ApplyPat" in your "Startup Items" folder to de-install BeforeDark.

  33. You might want to run the "Virginize System" command the first time you use this method if you have a non standard pattern installed in order to restore your General Control Panel.

  35. This solves some anomalies with the PowerBook and Duo's.

  37. BeforeDark does not use any system extensions (INITs), Control Panels (CDEVs), and does not patch the system in any way.

  62. In keeping with my NO INIT's or CDEV's philosophy here is a system 7 clean application to collect and install desktop patterns (ppat resource's).

BeforeDark installs ppat (PixelPattern) for your desktop background. The interface is very elegant in both usage and esthetics.  By using up to 256 x 256 pixel ppat's you can create very complex background textures without having to use a PICT the size of your screen which saves memory. Over the years I have downloaded every public domain ppat resource I could find, and I think you'll agree you've never seen ones of the likes of these.
